DOES BLUES MUSIC MATTER TO YOU?

Blues Matters“I feel that the problem with Blues isn’t in the music - the music is very much alive! I feel that it is more in the way that it has been labelled… Blues has had lots of re-inventions. I don’t see why we can’t keep moving forward in that way. Just making sure Blues is getting the credit its due - that’s what’s important these days.” Naughty Jack

“I think there has always been a rather narrow-minded view about what constitutes the Blues in this country, and I feel that certain parties believe they are safeguarding the genre by warding off the perceived threat that is musical development and mixing of styles. I think they genuinely want to do their best by the music they love, but, in my opinion, they stifle any chance the genre has of finding appeal amongst the younger generations. If we fail to achieve this, I’m not sure what it will mean for the Blues.” Ian Parker

“We all - musicians and singers, editors and writers, promoters and publicists, record-companies and media people, critics and fans - need to look at what’s happening with other categories of music and learn. How good is our work? What would make people want it? Are we promoting it wisely? Is its image attractive? If we don’t support it ourselves, why do we imagine somebody else is going to do it for us?” Paul Jones

“I think the media in the UK are so obsessed with image, and the idea that pop music is generally safe that they won’t give much time to anything that is in opposition to ‘the mainstream’. I also think that a lot of music lovers view the Blues as a form that has become passé. Young people - who the mass media are always trying to appeal to - don’t generally get turned on by ‘rootsy’ music, and I think the radio/TV guys need to work harder to sell it in an easily accessible way to new audiences.” Andy Weaver (Chicken Legs Weaver)

Blues Matters! was created because we felt the same as these recording artists, and the many, many music/Blues lovers who did not have a voice elsewhere.

Remember, if we are to continue promoting Blues music in the manner it deserves, we need the support of Blues/music lovers.

If you agree with these sentiments and share our vision, please make sure you are subscribing to the magazine, through digital and/or physical subscriptions.

Lemon Squeezers, Pool Players and Jelly Roll Bakers: Innuendo in the Early Blues

Blues NewsAccording to the musicologist Alan Lomax, "sexual conflict" constitutes a major theme of early blues music, and provides the subject matter for a number of songs about "a man longing for a woman he has mistreated or who has mistreated him." Modern audiences, however, may find the more bawdy blues compositions somewhat difficult to engage with, for the language used to describe sexual matters is by now archaic and is also rife with allusion, slang and doublespeak. Given this potential for confusion, a brief guide to what Taj Mahal calls the "erotic mystery" of the blues might be enlightening, or at the very least entertaining. While the list below is by no means exhaustive, it constitutes an attempt to supply a glossary of some of the more colourful terms used by blues musicians to refer to sex. For each double entendre, a particular song name and artist are cited, although it should be noted that most of these phrases occur in more than one work.

M for Mississippi Receives Blues Music Award for DVD of the Year

Blues NewsThe critically acclaimed blues film M FOR MISSISSIPPI has just collected its highest honor to date: A Blues Music Award for DVD of the Year.

M FOR MISSISSIPPI, which is a co-production of Broke & Hungry Records, Cat Head Delta Blues & Folk Art and Mudpuppy Recordings, was one of five nominated movies. Its competition included films featuring platinum-selling rock legend Carlos Santana, blues icon Albert Collins, guitarist Ronnie Earl and Chicago bluesman Little Arthur Duncan.

“Considering the competition, we were truly surprised and humbled to receive this amazing recognition,” said Roger Stolle, one of the film’s creators. “It’s a testament to the great music that continues to flow from Mississippi and to the incredible artists who create it.”

M FOR MISSISSIPPI has been described as “part road trip, part buddy film.” It follows Stolle and fellow blues producer Jeff Konkel on a weeklong journey through Mississippi as they visit a dozen of the state’s most fascinating blues figures. The duo’s road trip, captured by cinematographer Damien Blaylock, led them to rustic environments ranging from juke joints to cotton fields and placed them face-to-face with such fascinating artists as James “T-Model” Ford, Robert Belfour, Robert “Bilbo” Walker, Jimmy “Duck” Holmes and more. Completing the production team were co-producer Kari Jones and sound engineer Bill Abel.

“It’s mind-blowing to think that just over a year ago, we were piling into Roger’s van to start this journey and now here we are holding Blues Music Award statues,” Konkel said. “We’re so grateful to everyone who voted for the film and to all of the artists, individuals and organizations who supported us on this labor of love.”

During their acceptance speeches, the filmmakers noted that without the contributions of several key sponsors, the film could not have been made. Sponsors included the Rootsway Roots ‘n Blues Association of Parma, Italy, LiveBluesWorld, Delta Music Experience, the Mississippi Film Office, British blues guitarist Bob Long and radio DJ Robert Haley.

Since its inception 30 years ago, the Blues Music Awards – formerly known as the Handy Awards – have been the genre’s gold standard. Through the years, Blues Music Awards have been bestowed on such seminal figures as Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Lee Hooker, Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, Etta James and B.B. King. King himself was in attendance at last night’s award ceremony, as were such rock luminaries as Bonnie Raitt and Steve Miller.

The M for Mississippi DVD and its CD soundtrack are distributed nationally by Burnside Distribution Corporation.

For more information on M for Mississippi, visit the film’s official web site at www.mformississippi.com or contact the filmmakers at jeff@brokeandhungryrecords.com or roger@cathead.biz.

Head teacher Michael Ford decided to give himself a CD for his 60th birthday!

Blues NewsHead teacher Michael Ford decided to give himself a CD for his 60th birthday, which is good news for the people who go to a club that’s been called one of the best-kept secrets in live music. No, he’s not nipped into HMV to treat himself to the latest Girls Aloud single, he’s decided it’s time for the club’s resident band to cut their first disc.

For once all the paperwork’s finished at his school, Russell Hall Primary, in Queensbury, Michael goes home to Braithwaite Village, in Keighley, and switches roles. He becomes the driving force behind the Bronte Blues Club and leader of its house band.

It’s the Bronte Blues Combo – affectionately known to club-goers as the BBC5 – who warm up the crowd at Lay***** Village Hall for some of the world’s best blues artists once or twice a month. Lay***** Village Hall? Yes, it seems unlikely but the home of the local WI and venue for beetle drives transmogrifies itself into the very essence of a Chicago blues hideaway when the club’s volunteers swoop in armed with blue neon, posters of artists, candles and rickety tables. - Click Read More!

Does anyone know or these bands? if so give us a shout!

Blues NewsHello Blues Matters..
I was hoping to pick your vast readers knowledge of British blues. I used to help run a blues club at South bank Poly in the elephant and castle between 1969/1972. We had an awesome series of guests when I think back including Mike Cooper; Prager and Rye. Good earth( Later Mungo Jerry) Alexis Korner; Cousin James; Duster Bennett. fantastic.

People including myself used to do floor spots as well. One guy used to turn up with a little amp tied to a shopping basket type trolley and his guitar and harmoinca rack. he miked his harp through the little amp and got a superb down home sound. A bit like Doctor Ross, JB lenoir etc. He called himself Brixton Bill and I have been searching for info on him for years. Always wore a pork pie hat. he was really superb. He was bit too "authentic" for many's taste back then but I loved him. Has anyone any ideas?. Also there was an amazing band called The Nighthawks who played there often and backed other guests as well. Ever heard of them, know what they are up to now?.

Perhaps somebody reading this might know or might have come across these two acts and could let me know any info

Thanks
Paul Gilbert

AC/DC Exhibition Proud Camden by Sam Pentony

Blues MattersIf BM was richer the entire office would be plastered with the images at the proud gallery this evening. Unfortunately we deal in blues and poverty, and all the fantastic images of Angus and his band-mates had to stay hung on the beautifully lit walls. As far as press events go BM was a little off the beaten track with these antipodean rock royals but non- the less felt at home.

The setting of the old horse hospital adds a refreshingly unique experience this evening and creates an atmosphere rarely felt in press outings, Considering the beer was free, trips to the bar were few and far between as I pored over the history of the images and their photographer Phillip Morris. Unfortunately the Australian rock photographer wasn’t in the building for this particular exhibition. I guess his residency in much warmer climes the other side of the world stopped him from attending. As a gallery Proud succeeds in paying tribute not only to the images themselves but also to the photographers that take them.

It is rare to find a gallery that works both as a bar, venue and space for art, but proud succeeds on all counts. As far as the images go it is far more appealing to see them on the walls of proud than in publications like our own or indeed on the internet. If readers ever happen to be in Camden make sure proud galleries is on the list of destinations to check out.

Issue 48 Available soon to check out more!

Samuel Pentony

Decibels, dwindling crowds and the downturn! by Richard Thomas

Blues MattersWhat’s The Point ? It’s an old church turned live music venue in the heart of Cardiff Bay. I went to a wedding there once – the matron of honour and flower girl stood for misty photographs on a spot where days later grizzled roadies probably unloaded for a Megadeth tribute band. The sisters of the bride one week, the Sisters of Mercy the next.

But no more. Mounting debts and problems with the neighbours have conspired to finish off the venue at the heart of Cardiff Bay, and as the big wooden doors close for the final time, is this indicative of a more deep seated problem and tough times ahead for local music fans?

THE BLACK CROWES ONE-OFF LONDON SHOW NOW AT O2 ACADEMY BRIXTON

Gigs and ConcertsNews that The Black Crowes are to play a one-off show in London on Sunday 17th May created such demand from their British fans that the show has been moved to the O2 Academy Brixton.

Right from their start in 1990—with their six million-selling Shake Your Money Maker, a pivotal work that kick started an authentic style of rock and roll in America—The Black Crowes have been at odds with prevailing commercial trends. Their heady mix of '70s inflected rock, Funkadelic soul and heartfelt roots music jostled against the hair metal and high-gloss pop getting airplay at the start of that decade. While the sheer attitude and charm of "Hard To Handle," “Jealous Again,” "Twice As Hard" and “Remedy” managed to make big waves, the intervening years have seen the band steadily evolve an increasingly refined, singular sound that takes the best parts of hard rock, gospel, country, psychedelia and anything else it fancies into their hungry maw to create something several light years beyond the young men who recorded "She Talks To Angels."
